M4A files
M4A files are MPEG-4 Audio files used to play audio. The M4A file uses the MPEG-4 container format, much like the MP4 file, but only contains audio, which is encoded with either the Advanced Audio Coding codec or the Apple Lossless Audio Codec. The ".m4a" extension was created because of the confusion between MPEG-4 video files and MPEG-4 audio-only files. The format has grown in popularity as the iTunes Store provides songs in the M4A format.
